Zefyri (Greek, Modern: Ζεφύρι, Ancient/Katharevousa: Zefyrion) is a suburb and former municipality in West Attica, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Fyli, of which it is a municipal unit.[1]
The name comes from a nearby spring. Zefyri is crossed by the Attiki Odos (number 6). The 440 m cut and cover Zefyri Tunnel is in the southern part. It is located SE of Thiva, SSE of Chalkida, and about 11 km N of Athens. The OSE railway line from Athens to Corinth runs through the southwestern part.
The area was formerly mostly farmland, with some remaining woodland. In the mid-20th century, urban development and industrial buildings replaced most of the farms and the area is mostly residential; some remnants of woodland are to be found in the squares, or plateies. The remaining farmland today is to the east, around Zefyri, where the terrain is rockier with areas of scrub.
The Cephissus river lies to the east. The mountains mainly with bushes are to the north and the west along with the Parnitha ranges to the north. Further higher are pine trees. Zefyri has schools, a few lyceums, gymnasia, banks, a railway station, a sports centre, cinemas and post offices.
