Yves Rumpler
Yves Rumpler, known as Eulemur Rumpele [ølemyr rumpølø], born in 1938, is a researcher and French professor of embryology and primatology at the Louis Pasteur University of Strasbourg.
Brief history
- Yves Rumpler directs the Institute of embryology of the medical college of Strasbourg since 1980.
- For many years he taught embryology and social sciences to the first-year students of medicine, until the academic year 2006/2007, when he retired.
- He also served as department head of the Laboratory of Reproductive Biology and Cytogenetics Laboratory, quantitative cytology and histology at teaching hospital of Strasbourg.
- From 1966 to 1976, he was an associate lecturer in histology and embryology seconded to the National School of Medicine of Madagascar at Tananarive.
- He received an honorary doctorate from the Ruhr University of Bochum, Germany.
Specialties
When Yves Rumpler was named attending in 1959 then chief of work in 1966 the Institute of embryology of Strasbourg his research carry on topics of Strasbourg traditional (thyroid hormones, teratology) but as from 1967 the orientation of his work changes going on the systematic one and chromosomal evolution of the Malagasy Primates lemurs; he is consequently universally recognized for his work in primatology. In 2001 is made up under its direction the research unit “Mankind and primates: Variability and evolution (EA 3428)” at the Louis Pasteur University of Strasbourg, directed today by the pr. Bertrand Ludes and gathering researchers of Institut of Embryology, Institute of Normal Anatomy, Institute of Legal medicine and Faculty of Dental surgery of Strasbourg.

Yves Rumpler took part in the description of new species of primates:
- Hapalemur aureus Meier, Albignac, Peyrieras, Wright and Rumpler, described in 1987
- Tarsius dentatus Niemitz, Nietsch, Warter and Rumpler, described into 1991 in Sulawesi (Indonesia)
- Tarsius dianae Niemitz, Nietsch, Warter and Rumpler, described in 1991
- Lepilemur aeeclis Andriaholinirina, To distort, Roos, Zinner, Thalmann, Rabarivola, Ravoarimanana, Ganzhom, Meier, Hilgartner, Walter, Zaromody, Langer, Hahn, Zimmermann, Radespiel, Craul, Tomiuk, Tattersall and Rumpler, Lepelemuridae lemur discovered in Madagascar and described in 2006
- Lepilemur randrianasoli Andriaholinirina, To distort, Roos, Zinner, Thalmann, Rabarivola, Ravoarimanana, Ganzhom, Meier, Hilgartner, Walter, Zaromody, Langer, Hahn, Zimmermann, Radespiel, Craul, Tomiuk, Tattersall and Rumpler, Lepelemuridae lemur discovered in Madagascar and described in 2006

He also created the genus name for the true lemurs: Eulemur (Simons & Rumpler 1988). This new genus joined together the species Eulemur fulvus, E. mongoz, E. macaco, E. rubriventer and E. coronatus which were previously in the Lemur genus.
