Yuzhno-Kurilsky District

Yuzhno-Kurilsky District (Russian: Ю́жно-Кури́льский район) is an administrative district (raion) of Sakhalin Oblast, Russia. It comprises the southernmost part of the Kuril chain with the islands of Kunashir, Shikotan, and the Habomai rocks. The district's administrative center is the urban locality (an urban-type settlement) of Yuzhno-Kurilsk, situated on Kunashir. District's population: 9,502 (2010 Census preliminary results);[1] 9,727 (2002 Census);[2]

Municipally, it is incorporated as Yuzhno-Kurilsky Urban Okrug (Ю́жно-Кури́льский городско́й о́круг).

The district in its entirety along with the island of Iturup is claimed by Japan. According to the Japanese, these islands belong to Nemuro Subprefecture of Hokkaidō Prefecture.
