Yuanling Yuan (born 3 June 1994, Shanghai, China) is a Canadian chess player.

Her family moved to Canada when Yuanling Yuan was 5 years old. Her father taught her to play Chess. In 2003 they moved from Ottawa to Toronto. In Ottawa she was playing for the RA Chess Club. Her club in Toronto is the Scarborough Chess Club. She is attending the Victoria Park Collegiate Institute in Toronto.[1]

Achievements

In 2003 Yuanling Yuan became Canadian Master in the under 10 age group. In 2007 she won as a 7th-Grader the High School Championship in Toronto and Ontario as well as become Junior Master of Toronto.[2] In 2008 she came second to Cuban Zirka Frometa Castillo at the Pan-American Women Championship in San Salvador.[3] She also came second in 2008 at the zonal tournament in Kitchener, Ontario.

As member of the Canadian National Women Team she played the 38th Chess Olympiad 2008 in Dresden on second board (6.5 points out of 10 games) and the 39th Chess Olympiad 2010 in Khanty-Mansiysk on first board (7.5 points out of 11 games).

Since October 2009 she holds the title of Woman International Master (WIM) as the youngest Canadian in history becoming WIM. She met the norms at the Pan-American Women Championship in may 2008 with excellence as well as six weeks later at a tournament in Chicago. Her Elo rating is 2220 as of November 2011, which is the highest that has ever been achieved by a Canadian woman.

Chess in the Library

In 2009 she founded the program Chess in the Library. This voluntary organisation draws interest to chess in public libraries, including the opportunity to play and organise chess in libraries. The organisation has more than 20 member libraries in Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia and Washington, D.C.[4]
