Young Independence promotes a more domestic agenda in particular focusing on youth issues and the expansion and use of party policy in campaigns and elections. Although UKIP is traditionally renowned for its anti-EU policies, former Young Independence Chairman Michael Heaver has taken opportunities on the party's official website to promote policy on tuition fees[2] and knife crime[3], as well as appearing on the BBC programme Question Time.[4][5]
2011 has seen Young Independence covered more in the media, with complimentary appearances in the New Statesman [6] and Daily Mail Online[7].
The 2011/2012 Young Independence council includes:
Other posts include National Director of Young Independence (currently co-chaired by UKIP Party Director Lisa Duffy and UKIP Deputy Leader Paul Nuttall MEP) and regional Young Independence Chairmen.
On 8th September 2011 at UKIP Conference in Eastbourne, Olly Neville was elected in a by-election for the position of Elections Officer, vacated by Chris Cassidy.
YI Council positions will be up for election at the next Spring Conference in March 2012 held in Skegness.
During late 2010, it was agreed that there would be the appointments from the National YI council of Regional chairmen. The first three of these positions were then given to a trio of members in good standing, based across the country.
New regional posts will be assigned later on in the year.
