Yong In University is a private university located in Samga-dong, Choin-gu, Yongin-shi, Kyonggi Province, Korea. The school opened as Korea Judo School in 1953 under the founding slogan of "Be the one who contributes to society through moral cultivation." It was commissioned as a four-year undergraduate school in 1971 and changed its name to Korea Physical Science College to the current name, Yong In University in 1993. Started as a physical education college, it is a private university with total 35 departments for both day and night sessions in the 6 colleges: Martial Art, Physical Science, Culture & Art, Business Administration, Environmental Science and Health & Welfare. Also, the university has established 7 special graduate schools in Education, Physical Science, Art, Business, Rehabilitation & Health Science, Taekwondo, Cultural Asset and one general graduate school with 8 subordinate organizations including the Central Library and 18 affiliate organizations to develop competitive global talents.

The history of Yong In University

Yong In University from 1953 - 1970

Yong In University was founded as a 2-year college called the Korea Judo College in 1953 in Sogong-dong. Then, in 1956, the Korea Judo College was transformed into a 4-year college with the establishment of the Daemyung School. In 1970, it moved to Pungnap-dong.

Continued growth 1971 - 1987

In 1971, the Korea Judo College was approved as a basic four-year college and began enhancing its academic status. Starting with the Judo Department, other sports disciplines and departments were gradually established laying the foundation for YIU to become a sports research university. In 1985, the campus then moved to Yong In as it continued to grow and develop.

Becoming a fully accredited university 1988 - 1993

In 1988, the Korea Judo College was accredited as a regular four-year college. In 1990, the college renamed itself The Korea Sports Science College. In 1992, the college was finally awarded university status. In 1993, the college renamed itself Yong In University. At the same time, the School Board also changed its name to the Dan-Ho School. During this period, the University established new departments including the Department of Environmental Health and the Graduate School.

Pivotal growth years 1994 - 2002

In 1994 with the new president Jung-Haeng Kim, the university broadened its fields of study founding several new departments. There were six colleges and eight graduate schools established in this period and the university improved the quality and depth of all its studies. The six colleges were the College of Martial Arts, the College of Sports Sciences, the College of Business, the College of Natural Sciences and the College of Arts, College of Public Health & Welfare.

Yong In University was founded in 1953 as Korea Judo College under the founding philosophy of "Be the one who contributes to society through moral cultivation."[1]

Educational goal

Yong In University has established its objective to develop talented people who will contribute to the common good by promoting good through the cultivation of sound body and mind and by realizing oneself. This means maintaining consistency in pursuing the mission of the university which will be responsible for the training of leaders and the education of democratic citizens who will succeed academics and pass down culture while ultimately contributing to the development of the nation and the society and the realization of mankind's ideal.[2]

Yong In University has audio video labs and is operating training programs to provide counselling, guidance and man-to-man tutoring by professors.[4]

Study Abroad System

The university is running various language programs and holds foreign language contests (English, Chinese, Japanese) every semester hosted by the International Education Institute, providing study abroad opportunities in each semester to awarded students. [5]

Exchange Student Program

Exchange students can choose among English, Japanese and Chinese-speaking countries. They are selected based on their language proficiency in the respective region and are given chances to study abroad either in March/April for the first semester and September/October in the second semester.[6][7]

It is a system to confer an undergraduate degree to outstanding students who have acquired credits required for graduation within 6 to 7 semesters.[8]

Credit Exchange with Open Cyber University (OCU)

One may acquire maximum 6 credits per semester online.[9]

Credit Exchange Program

Yong In University has made agreement with 26 other universities in Kyonggi-Incheon area to exchange students and to acknowledge credits earned at the partner school.[10]

Professional Teacher Education Program

Students who enroll in the college of education or departments in which teaching course is established/approved can acquire a certificate for secondary school teacher(Level 2).[11]

Campus Life

Research Activities

Dissertation presentations and academic events on majors are held by college and department, academic society, circle. Dissertations are published on on and off campus journals and relevant lectures are held as well. [12][13]

University Magazine Publication

The School Paper Editting Committee publishes school paper Danho every year. Information on various social issues, dissertation, essay and literature are included. Outstanding works are awarded Baekho Literature Award every year.[14]

University Festival

It is a festival where academic lecture, presentations, exhibition of illustrated poems, singing contest, broadcast festival, concerts by circles and scheduled events by college are held. School faculty, alumni and campus neighbors participate as well.[15]

University Sports Festival

It is a festival in which colleges and departments compete against one another in various sports. [16]

University Library

With Academic Information Support Section and Academic Information Reading Section, Yong In University Central Library comprises 2 fifth-story buildings (total 7,606㎡), which stores books and other sources of information. [17]

University Museum

The museum, located within Yong In University campus, accommodates exhibit hall, storages, data rooms, preservation rooms and research rooms of 795㎡. Also special exhibitions and academic conferences are held every year in the meseum, which is registered as the career certifying institution and the professional institution for the exploration of culture assets and the survey on landmarks.[18]

Office of Athletics

The Directorate has been established and managed to provide comprehensive support to sports talents and the training team.[19]

University Newspaper & Broadcasting Center

University Newspaper : This is a media body of Yong In University.[20]

Education Broadcast System : Opened on October 23rd, 1986 and the motto is truth, creativity, sincerity[21]

Center for Industry & Academic Cooperation

The committee provides administrative support and assistance in comprehensive fields such as human resource development, R&D, technology transfer through research commissioned and coordination with industrial bodies.[22]

Sports & Wellness Research Center

Office of Information Management

The Directorate provides information dissemination system via such IT service as high speed wire(less) network, all-in-one information system, lecture support system, portal system, etc.[23]
