The organization launched in January 2002 when the founders, Mike Foster and Craig Gross, set up a booth inside the AVN Adult Entertainment Expo in Las Vegas to promote the website as an alternative to porn, and it continues to attend porn conventions worldwide.[1]
In 2005, the independent film Missionary Positions was released, which documented the origins of XXXchurch. The film was produced and directed by documentary film maker, Bill Day.[2][3] The film documents Mike Foster's departure from XXXchurch in 2004.
The organization has received support from prominent Christian pastors such as Bill Hybels,[4] Craig Groeschel, Rick Warren and Rob Bell.[5]
Craig Gross is also a published author, having written Questions You Can't Ask Your Mama About Sex, The Gutter, Dirty Little Secret, Pure Eyes Eyes Of Integrity Jesus Loves You This I Know and Starving Jesus.[6] Craig Gross appeared on an episode of MTV's True Life, in which he counseled a man addicted to porn.[7]
XXXchurch garnered national press coverage and notoriety through exhibiting at pornography conventions across the world. The group has given out thousands of Bibles with "Jesus Loves Porn Stars" on the cover at these conventions, a facet of their ministry which has been featured in American national media.[8][9]
The founder of XXXchurch.com, Craig Gross, regularly debates porn star Ron Jeremy in an event called "The Porn Debate"[10] on college campuses across the United States. In the summer of 2007, the duo embarked on a theater tour across the eastern US. In 2008, the debate was featured on ABC News' Nightline both on air and online, with the segment becoming the most watched in Nightline's online viewing history.[11]
XXXchurch.com also offers accountability software called X3Watch, which logs all questionable websites that a user accesses based on content type, and then sends a report to an "accountability partner" of the person's choosing. The program, which can be turned off at any time, has the goal of helping individuals to be open, honest and accountable to each other about their web surfing.[12]
In 2008, the organization launched a video podcast that documents the current campaigns of XXXchurch. It is released every two weeks on XXXchurch.tv and iTunes.[13] It also has several radio public service announcements airing across the US and abroad on various radio stations and syndicated programs such as RadioU,[14] Refuge Radio,[15] Malone University Radio,[16] The Full Armor of God Broadcast[17] and Fuel Radio[18]
XXXchurch.com's video, "Operation: Save the Kittens", used the popular Internet meme "Every time you masturbate... God kills a kitten", to talk about masturbation.[19]
