Set in 1962, players will take the role of William Carter, a field intelligence officer with the FBI now assigned to XCOM, whose job is to identify and eliminate an unknown extraterrestrial threat. He'll make use of the division's resources to better understand and confront this new enemy.[2]
XCOM was officially revealed at E3 2010, and is scheduled to be released on March 6, 2012. It was thought the game would be a more linear FPS experience, coming off the popularity of the Bioshock franchise, however, more recent info suggests the game is closer to it's UFO Defense roots than expected, with the only major difference being the setting and viewpoint.
2K Marin assured they would keep elements from the original game, such as squad and base management, free-form non-linear mission progression, and squad-based tactical combat. When questioned as to why XCOM is not an isometric strategy game, 2K Games president Christoph Hartmann answered "pure strategy games are just not contemporary".[3] Director of Development Morgan Gray admits "It’s been like going to X-Com boot camp for the team, creatively – really understanding what’s at the core of the franchise and how we can carry that forward. We had a lot to learn.”[4]
