Worben is a municipality in the Seeland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

Geography

Worben has an area of 2.8 km2 (1.1 sq mi). Of this area, 62.4% is used for agricultural purposes, while 8.6% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 28.3% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (0.7%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains).[3]

Demographics

Worben has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 2,260.[1] As of 2007, 8.0% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 26.4%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (91.4%), with French being second most common ( 2.4%) and Turkish being third ( 1.8%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 34.4% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (22.3%), the FDP (16.1%) and the Green Party (9.1%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 21.1% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 58.5% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 20.4%. In Worben about 73.1% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).

Worben has an unemployment rate of 1.52%. As of 2005, there were 139 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 14 businesses involved in this sector. 162 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 14 businesses in this sector. 538 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 37 businesses in this sector.[3]
