Winnetka is a district in the west-central San Fernando Valley in the City of Los Angeles.
Winnetka is located next to Canoga Park on the west, Woodland Hills on the south, Chatsworth to the north, and Reseda to the east. Corbin Avenue is the eastern boundary, DeSoto Avenue is the western boundary, Victory Boulevard is the southern boundary, and Nordhoff Street is the northern boundary. It is bordered by the Southern Pacific Coast Line railroad to the north and the Los Angeles River to the south. Major thoroughfares include Winnetka Avenue, Mason Avenue, Roscoe Boulevard, Sherman Way, Saticoy Street, Parthenia Street and Vanowen Street. In 1920, the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce requested that Charles Weeks come to the San Fernando Valley to establish a series of one-acre egg farms. The farms would be based on the successful formula Mr. Weeks developed in East Palo Alto, California. The "poultry colony" Mr. Weeks created in the Winnetka area of the valley eventually developed into a small farming community named Weeks Poultry Colony. Later Weeks renamed the colony to Winnetka, after a farm he owned in Winnetka, Illinois.[1]
Before World War II, this area was rural, in agricultural use, as was much of the western San Fernando Valley.
Despite a common misconception, the township of Winnetka was never a part of neighboring Canoga Park. Winnetka was founded in 1922 by Charles Weeks[2] and has remained a distinct entity since. Canoga Park did not receive its name until 1931.[2]
Population in 2004: 49,154 (In 1990: 39,261). In 2009, the Los Angeles Times's "Mapping L.A." project supplied these Winnetka neighborhood statistics: population: 46,943; median household income: $62,535.[11] The demographic makeup of the Winnetka community is: 42.1% Latino, 35.6% Caucasian, 14.2% Asian, 5.9% Black, 2.9% Multi-Racial, 0.3% American Indian, 0.1% Pacific Islander.[12] Dun & Bradstreet businesses = 1,002.
