Wingerworth is a relatively large village and parish near to Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England.[1] It is one of the largest and most populous villages in the district of North East Derbyshire. Wingerworth is only two miles south west of the town of Chesterfield, 12 miles south of Sheffield and 120 miles north of the United Kingdom's capital, London. The settlements of Tupton, Clay Cross, Grassmoor and Ashover are also nearby. Wingerworth is a semi-rural village with the large town of Chesterfield to the north but countryside to the south with Buxton and Ripley as popular places to visit and Chatsworth House as a popular tourist destination.

Education

Wingerworth has two coeducational, non-denominational primary schools (Deer Park Primary School and Hunloke Park Primary School). Both have around 200 to 300 pupils, drawn from the area and surrounding villages. The schools have friendly rivalry in sports such as football, cricket, tag rugby and netball. Wingerworth also has two pre-schools and nurseries in New Road Nursery and Hunloke Park school for children aged between 2-4 years. Secondary education is usually provided in nearby Tupton, at Tupton Hall secondary school.

Facilities

There are several small shops in Wingerworth like the SPAR and Nisa-Today's (General Stores), an English fish and chip takeaway, a Chinese food takeaway, two hairdressers, and a fruit and vegetable shop. Wingerworth also has a doctor's surgery and a chemist. There is a Post Office located inside the Nisa-Today's . A large park is in the centre and woodland and green areas are scattered around the village. There are also a couple of pubs: one, the traditional Barley Mow. The other one is the more modern Smithy Pond, built juxtaposed a lake at the other end of the village.

Sports

Football is the main sport played in Wingerworth and it has some football teams that play in district leagues. The WJSA is a junior football association that plays in the Rowsley league and has many different teams for both boys and girls. Wingerworth has a football pitch, a cricket field, several tennis courts and a bowling green in the main park.

There are many clubs and groups in the village for all ages, including the 3rd Wingerworth Scout Group.
