Wingas GmbH is a gas distribution, transport and storage company located in Kassel, Germany. The company was established in 1993 by Wintershall Holding AG, a subsidiary of BASF, and Gazprom. Since 25 October 2007, Wintershall owns 50 percent plus one share, while Gazprom's stock is 50 percent less one share.[1]
Wingas operates over 2,000 kilometers of natural gas pipelines through its subsidiary Wingas Transport GmbH & Co. KG. The company operates the largest natural gas storage facility in Western Europe with a working gas volume of 4.2 billion cubic meters (bcm). The gas storage is located in Rehden in North Germany. Another large gas storage facility with capacity of 2.4 bcm is the Haidach gas storage.[2] Wingas is investigating the feasibility of constructing gas storage also near the Dutch-German border at Jemgum. In 2004 Wingas purchased the Saltfleetby Gas Field, which will be used for gas storage in the United Kingdom.[3][4]
