Richview, Toronto

Richview is a neighbourhood in the city of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is located in the former city of Etobicoke. It is bounded on the west by Highway 401 and on the north by the highway and by Dixon Road, Royal York Road on the east, and Eglinton Avenue West along the south. It encompasses the former post office of "Richview" which was merged into the then-borough of Etobicoke.

Character

The neighbourhood is predominantly residential and upper middle class. Ethnically, the area identifies itself as 57% English, with a lower proportion of immigrants than the rest of the City of Toronto. The largest group by ethnic origins is Italian at 4,920 out of 21,570. There are no large commercial areas in the neighbourhood. Local plazas are located at the intersections of the main streets.

The housing is predominantly single-family homes. The street patterns are the winding roads and cul-de-sacs of post-World War II suburbs.

Along the southern boundary is Eglinton Avenue West, a major six-lane arterial roadway. North-south roads include Royal York Road, Martin Grove Road, Islington Avenue and Kipling Avenue, all large four-lane arterial roads.

Communities

There are several small neighbourhoods within Richview. Willowridge covers the triangle at the far west of the neighbourhood west of Martin Grove. The Westway, also known as St. Phillip's is a community that covers the northwest portion of Richview, east of Kipling and north of The Westway. Martin Grove Gardens is the area bounded by Kipling, The Westway, Martin Grove, and Dixon.

Schools

• Kipling Collegiate Institute

Hilltop Middle School is a middle school on Trehorne Drive located near The Westway and Royal York Ave. It first opened in 1958. Most graduates of Hilltop go to Scarlett Heights Entrepreneurial Academy or Richview Collegiate Institute for high school education.

Princess Margaret Junior School is a public elementary school Tromley Drive, near the intersection of Eglinton Avenue and Martin Grove Road. The school was first opened in September 1959 and served the students of the community for the next 25 years. The school was closed in June 1984 due to declining enrolment. In 1995, when the primary/junior-aged population had grown sufficiently in the community, the school was officially re-opened by her Royal Highness, The Princess Margaret, on July 12, 1996...

History

One part of the existing neighbourhood predates the suburbanization of the area. Richview began in 1852 when a post office called "Richview" opened in this area. Richview gave its name to the proposed Richview Expressway.

Transportation

The Westway is served by the 52 Lawrence Avenue West TTC bus route. Royal York Road is served by the 73,A,B and C buses.
