Since news of a new record was announced, singer/songwriter Steve Perry has stated the primary musical direction of the new Daddies album would be focusing mostly on the band's usual swing sound as well as their interpretation of rockabilly and psychobilly.[2] He elaborated on the sound of the album, "[it's] kind of like psychobilly with horns...[i]t's like the swing stuff we deal with, it's a little straighter, but with still a swung beat and then some heavy guitar and some R&B and swing elements in there", describing the goal of the production was "to make something like Turbonegro would play, like, rockabilly", noting an emphasis on guitar distortion and slap bass.[3]
Perry first expressed plans for new Cherry Poppin' Daddies material in a July 2010 interview, stating the band was in preparation over possibly recording two new studio albums, one "a swing-rockabilly kind of thing" and the other "an R&B...pop thing".[4] The following January, however, Perry revealed the R&B project had been scrapped in order to focus exclusively on the rockabilly album.
Perry documented parts of the album's development through Twitter. In March 2011, he announced that work had begun on the record, revealing a projected finish date by winter.[5] Recording took place during the summer, completed by October and mixed over the following months.[6][7] In a December interview, Perry confirmed the title of the album as White Teeth, Black Thoughts.[1]
White Teeth, Black Thoughts marks the debuts of lead guitarist William Seiji Marsh and tenor saxophonist Willie Matheis, both of whom joined the Daddies in 2010.
