Wengi is a municipality in the Seeland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

Geography

Wengi has an area of 7.1 km2 (2.7 sq mi). Of this area, 72.8% is used for agricultural purposes, while 16.6% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 7.4% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (3.3%) is non-productive (rivers or glaciers).[3]

Demographics

Wengi has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 615.[1] As of 2007, 7.7% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 16.2%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (96.0%), with French being second most common (1.8%) and Portuguese being third (0.7%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 49.7% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (11.1%), the Green Party (10.9%) and the FDP (9.8%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 26.1% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 58.2% and the seniors (over 64 years old) make up 15.8%. In Wengi about 83.4% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).

Wengi has an unemployment rate of 0.79%. As of 2005, there were 89 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 28 businesses involved in this sector. 14 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 6 businesses in this sector. 56 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 16 businesses in this sector.[3]
