Wendouree railway station is a passenger-only station on the Ballarat and Ararat railway lines, located in the western Ballarat suburb of Wendouree, Victoria approximately 100 metres west of the Gillies Street level crossing.

When opened in 2010 Wendouree station became one of just two functioning passenger railway stations in urban Ballarat and a terminus for many trains on the Ballarat railway line. Areas serviced include Wendouree, Alfredton and Lake Wendouree, Learmonth and Miners Rest—with a combined population of approximately 27,000.[1]

It currently receives 13 weekday trains, or 73 a week and is used for around 24,000 passenger trips a year.[2]

History

The station was initially planned by the Government of Victoria in response to congestion at Ballarat railway station resulting from a passenger boom since the introduction of fast rail services in 2005.[3] The construction of a new station was to provide a commuter rail service for people in Ballarat's western suburbs and nearby townships to commute to Melbourne's Central Activities District.

The station was announced in September 2006, and was due for completion in 2008.[4] The name was the subject of a competition which closed in April 2007[5] the winner of which was Joan Munson.[6]

The contract to build was awarded in 2008 to Melbourne civil engineering firm Cut and Fill, with work started in May that year.[7][8] Artists impressions released to the public in August 2008 depicted a sleek, modern building with red and grey panels and a sloping roof.[9]

The final cost of construction was A$18.7 million.[10]

It was officially opened by Public Transport Minister Lynne Kosky on Thursday, 11 June 2009 in a Ribbon-cutting ceremony ceremony at the station after which a mural by Ratartat and students from Yuille Park Community College featuring local landmarks and public transport themes was also unveiled.[11]

It opened to passengers on Sunday 14 June 2009.[12]

Initially eleven services a day were run to the station, made up of three services originating at the station in morning peak, two afternoon peak services terminating at the station, and six Ararat services (three in each direction) stopping at the station.[13] From 26 July 2010 the number of services per day was increased by two.

24,118 passengers used the station in the 13 months after opening.[14]

During the 2010 Victorian election campaign, the Liberal Party of Australia candidate declared that if elected all Ballarat services would terminate at Wendouree.[15]

Facilities

Wendouree railway station has an air-conditioned and heated main building, platform, 200-space car park, bus and taxi bays and bike racks and lockers.
