Warner Archive Collection

The Warner Archive Collection is a manufactured-on-demand DVD series. It was started by Warner Home Video on March 23, 2009 with the intention of putting previously unreleased back catalog films on DVD for the first time ever.[1] Using recordable DVDs, they custom burn discs for each order rather than the traditional business model of pressing a batch at a time. This saves on the costs of storing unsold stock in a warehouse.

In January 2011, the collection reached 800 titles consisting of films, TV shows, and television films from the vaults of Warner Bros. Pictures, Turner Entertainment Co. (including Hanna-Barbera, Ruby-Spears, pre-1986 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, and RKO Radio Pictures), Lorimar Productions, Warner Bros. Television, Allied Artists International, Monogram Pictures, and Largo Entertainment. The collection continues with new releases almost every week. Sony Pictures, MGM, and Universal have also started MOD services after the success of Warner Archives.[2][3][4] On April 13, 2011, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment announced that Warner Archive will offer 150 on-demand titles by SPHE's "Screen Classics by Request".[5]

As of fall 2011 the releases are primarily available online in the US via Warner, with many (not all) titles also available through Amazon. Availability outside the US is sporadic as Warner's website will not ship out of the US. Some titles are beginning to show up in limited quantities on Amazon.ca in Canada.
