WXYB (1520 AM) is a radio station broadcasting a Spanish / ethnic format. Licensed to Indian Rocks Beach, Florida, USA, the station is currently owned by Angelatos Broadcasting.
The station also sells brokered time to other advertisers and groups. One of these included Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, which regularly buys time on WXYB for its college radio endeavor, Hawk Radio. ([1])
Because it shares the same frequency as "clear channel" radio stations WWKB in Buffalo, New York and KOKC in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, this station operates during the daytime hours only. On May 15, 2008, the Federal Communications Commission fined WXYB with $4,000 (USD) for operating during the nighttime hours. Further inspections find that while the station signed off, equipment failure has prevented WXYB from shutting down completely. It has since then been fixed and the FCC also reduced the fines to $3,000 based on its history of compliance with the rules.[1]
WXYB transmits from a tower located on 82nd St North in Pinellas Park, FL. WXYB had been transmitting from the tower #1 used by WHBO. However in 2006, the tower fell when the guy wires were clipped by construction equipment at a nearby housing deveopment. [2]WXYB was forced to opreate from the third tower of the former WFSO (now WTBN) array on 82nd St. North. (This tower was not used by WHBO, while the other two in the array were), under FCC special Temporary Authority ("STA")[3]. In August, 2010, WXYB applied to use the "STA" tower as its permanent home, with a new nighttime authorization of 20 watts. The FCC granted the construction permit on October 14, 2011.[4][5]
