WWKL
WWKL (93.5 FM, "HOT 93.5") is a rhythmic contemporary music formatted radio station serving the Harrisburg metropolitan area. The Cumulus Communications outlet is licensed to Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. There is no relation with HOT 92 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania or HOT 100 in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Both of which are owned by Forever Broadcasting (http://www.foreverradio.com/) not Cumulus Media.
History
Prior to its flip to Rhythmic in 2002, the station was an Oldies outlet. The move was part of a shakeup in the market when sister station WNNK shifted to Adult Top 40 and to counter Rhythmic-leaning Top 40 Mainstream rival upstart WHKF-FM, a move that has paid off for them in terms of ratings. By 2006 WWKL began shifting towards a mainstream CHR direction to compete with WLAN-FM, even though as of 2009 they still report to R&R/Nielsen BDS Rhythmic Airplay panel[1]. This kind of direction has also sparked debate from radio message boards about stations that decided to add certain Pop and Dance tracks but stay within the Rhythmic realm[2]. Mediabase still reports the station as contemporary hit radio, and despite them not being contemporary hit radio, they have always been a rhythmic contemporary due to WHKF airing a contemporary hit radio format. Until 2011, Harrisburg was the largest Pennsylvania market having only one rhythmic station; it has lost to Philadelphia after Radio One flipped their rhythmic contemporary station WPHI-FM to urban contemporary in March following Mediabase's shift of the station from the rhythmic panel to the urban panel.
WWKL used to be at 94.9 with the moniker KOOL 94.9, playing oldies. KOOL 94.9 (later KOOL 99.3) achieved legendary status in Central PA, often admired by programmers all over the country; in fact, a frequent comment about KOOL 94.9 (99.3) was that "you could put KOOL in any major market in the USA, and it would kick butt."
HD Radio
Cumulus Broadcasting began upgrading its stations to HD Radio broadcasting in 2005. One of the first ten stations to be upgraded was WWKL.[3]
Frequency Change
On September 16, 2011 WWKL moved from 92.1 FM Palmyra, PA to 93.5 FM Mechanicsburg, PA, swapping frequencies with rock-formatted WTPA.
