WVIA-FM
WVIA-FM (89.9 FM) is the National Public Radio member station for Northeastern Pennsylvania. It is licensed to the community of Scranton. WVIA is owned by the Northeastern Pennsylvania Educational Television Association along with its sister television station, WVIA-TV. The station's studios are based in Jenkins Township, near Pittston, with transmitter just south of Wilkes-Barre. Since 2001, it has operated a full-time satellite in Williamsport, WVYA-FM.
WVIA-FM signed on in 1973.
The building housing the transmitters for WVIA-FM and WVIA-TV was destroyed by fire on February 12, 2010; as a result, the station is operating at reduced power from Marywood University.[1]
WVYA is a satellite station for WVIA, located on the FM dial at 89.7 mHz, for northeastern and central Pennsylvania. Operations are housed at WVIA-FM's studios in Jenkins Township, Pennsylvania.
WVIA-FM had operated a translator at 89.3 FM in Williamsport since the late 1970s. However, in 2001, it decided to open WVYA as a full-time satellite to serve more of the Williamsport area. The 89.3 FM translator is still used to improve reception in southern Williamsport.
Translators
In addition to the main station, WVIA-FM is relayed by an additional 9 translators to widen its broadcast area.
