History

The station was assigned call sign WNCV on May 7, 1992. On August 1, 2006, the station changed its call sign to WRKN. On November 19, 2009, WRKN swapped call signs with sister station WTKE-FM (which became WHWY).[2]

WFTW-AM, which began operating in 1953, and was owned and operated by Wilbur R. Powell of Vacationland Broadcasting of Crestview, FL. It was a 1,000 watt daytime station operating at 1260 kHz. In 1965, WFTW-FM 99.3 began operating at the same facility, and was mostly a simulcast of the AM programming. I joined WFTW as an announcer/engineer in 1966. We were told to announce the call letters as "WFTW-FM and WFTW, Fort Walton Beach, Florida", as they were really trying to promote the FM station.[3] The AM station WNUE is now The Ticket and is home to The Ticket Sports Network that includes WDSP 1280 AM, WFDM 1400 and WTKE 1490 AM. All owned by Omni Broadcasting of Fort Walton Beach, Florida. The former WTKE 98.1, which is now WHWY-FM 98.1 (100KW) is owned by Apex, along with WFFY, WWAV and WMXZ.
