WSND-FM (88.9 FM) is a radio station licensed to Notre Dame, Indiana, USA. WSND-FM began in 1962 as a 10-Watt non-commercial, educational station licensed to the University of Notre Dame. It was operated by students during the University Fall and Spring semesters. In 1971, it expanded its schedule and signal coverage with a new transmitter of 3,430 Watts which covered St.Joseph County, Indiana and its surrounding communities including parts of lower Michigan. It also expanded its staff to include university staff and area volunteers who helped keep the station operating during semester and summer breaks. Today, it continues to be operated with a complementary mix of students and volunteers. The station features classical music during the day, and a large variety of programming at night, including Jazz, Broadway, Celtic, Blues, Big Band, and Alternative rock.
In the mid 80's, under the stewardship of Eliot Coe, who was Jazz Director from 1984-1986, the station pioneered an eclectic mix of jazz music that later became known as the commercially successful smooth jazz format. The three weekly shows hosted by Coe were very popular and also showcased guest talent such as South Bend native Danny Lerman who went on to become an international Jazz artist.
Today, the station's flagship news broadcast is "WSND News," which airs every Friday at 5 p.m.[1][2]
