This radio station was first issued a construction permit in March 1988, and initially assigned the call letters WIZD. However, these call letters were not used and the station went on the air June 1, 1989 as WHMQ. WHMQ, though licensed to North Baltimore, maintained its studios and offices along Tiffin Avenue in Findlay, another small market.
For most of its existence as WHMQ, the station was known as "Jumpin' Country", with a frog likeness and a contemporary country programming fomat.
The station operated under the callsign of WIMJ from 1999 to 2002, and acquired the current WPFX-FM callsign in 2002, according to FCC records.[1] The station's former "Fox" active rock format today now operates on WBUK 106.3 MHz, aimed towards the Lima and Findlay regions. The station as of October 8, 2010 is now 107.7 The Wolf with a country format.
According to FCC filings,[2] the current license holder claims the station went off the air in August 2008 because the prior owner of the license failed to transfer the lease for the studio facilities to the new owners. The license holder is searching for new studio facilities. The FCC has granted a temporary "Stay Silent" order which gives the owners up to 6 months to acquire an appropriate facility and resume broadcasting.
Since that time a construction permit was granted in February 2010 to new owner Toledo Radio LLC to move its city of license from North Baltimore to Luckey and its transmitter to a new site southwest of the community between Bowling Green and Toledo, thus making WPFX a Toledo market move-in. Test transmissions began during the week of October 1, 2010. Full time broadcasting on WPFX is hoped to start soon after the transmitter site move of University of Findlay-owned WLFC to the new city of license of North Baltimore where it will return to the air with increased power, thus filling the gap left by the move of WPFX. More information can be found on the FCC's FM station database and the Radio-Locator website which is linked below.
WPFX has a slightly altered lineup, from before. Sandy Bennett mornings, Craig Snyder middays, Steven J Ananthas (formerly 'Steven J' of WXKR)and 50 minutes of music an hour with limited commercial interruptions. The Wolf plays "real country variety" from the artists that modernized country to today's favorites.
