WMUM-TV digital channel 7 (Ex-Analog Channel 29, Originally on Channel 15), part of the GPB network is the tenth and last Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) member Public television station established in the state of Georgia. WMUM serves the geographical center of the state of Georgia, including the city of Macon from its transmitter in Cochran, its city of license. The station's signal travels in about a 40-mile (65 km) radius from the transmitter site.

WMUM began broadcasting digitally on channel 7 in April 2008, and ceased analog the following February 17 along with the rest of GPB TV.

WMUM-TV broadcasts the following digital subchannels:

Channel Label Format Aspect Programming
29.1 1080i 16:9 GPB (mainly PBS) main programming, with HDTV content
29.2 480i 16:9 GPB Kids (PBS Kids) in windowboxed SD, since January 2009
Formerly main GPB programming in SD and GPB Radio on SAP, changed in mid-December 2008 to a placeholder station ID for future GPB Kids
29.3 480i 4:3 GPB Knowledge (mainly PBS World) in letterboxed SDTV

Programming is the same on all nine stations, but channel labels differ somewhat between them.

History

WMUM-TV signed on January 1, 1968 on channel 15 as WDCO-TV. In 1990, the station changed its UHF frequency from channel 15 to channel 29, the only time a GPB station has swapped channels. In the summer of 2006, the station changed its call sign to WMUM-TV, named after Mercer University in Macon. The name change reflects Mercer's involvement in GPB's operations in the Macon market, especially in the field of radio (see WMUM-FM).
