History

In 1978, a group of married couples, supported by the Catholic Church, formed the Willwoods Community. They joined forces with the Louisiana Educational Television Authority, which had been looking for a way to get its programming into the state's biggest market, to obtain the other noncommercial license for New Orleans. On December 14, 1981, under the banner of the Educational Broadcasting Foundation, the partnership obtained an educational broadcast license. Finally, in July of 1984, WLAE-TV signed on as a PBS member station.

In addition to offering PBS programming, WLAE also airs local educational programming, as well as some programming from LPB (mostly news and public affairs). LPB joined in the effort to get WLAE on the air to give the state's biggest market a chance to see its locally-based programming. WLAE is also one of very few PBS stations to show a daily Catholic Mass, live from St. Louis Cathedral.

WLAE is one of at least three PBS members owned at least in part by a Catholic-related organization (WXEL-TV in West Palm Beach, Florida and KMBH in the Rio Grande Valley are the others), and one of at least four run by a religious organization in general (counting Provo, Utah's KBYU-TV).[2]

Hurricane Katrina

Following Hurricane Katrina, WLAE sustained damage to their transmitter and they remained off the air to terrestrial viewers until early 2007. During the time their transmitter was off the air, WLAE provided a direct feed to local cable systems and to DirecTV satellite customers in the New Orleans market. Their analog signal was restored in January 2007 and their digital signal debuted on the air (for the first time) in March 2007.
