WKYU is the PBS member station for the Bowling Green, Kentucky. It is the only PBS station in Kentucky not affiliated with Kentucky Educational Television. It is owned and operated by Western Kentucky University with its transmitter 6 miles (10 km) north of Bowling Green on KY 185.
WKYU has not always had the distinction of being the sole non-KET PBS affiliate in Kentucky, however. From the 1968 inception of KET until the 1989 debut of WKYU, Louisville's WKPC, licensed to the city's government, was the state's only public television station outside the state network. WKPC and WKYU shared the distinction until KET acquired WKPC in 1998.
The station's digital signal is multiplexed, and all three services transmit in 480i standard definition:
