WHRV
WHRV is a Public Radio formatted broadcast radio station licensed to Norfolk, Virginia, serving Hampton Roads. WHRV is owned and operated by Hampton Roads Educational Telecommunications Association, Inc., which is operated by 18 public school systems in Eastern Virginia.
History
The station began in the late 1960s as WTGM. Hampton Roads Educational Telecommunications Association bought the then-financially troubled station in 1974 and changed the calls to WHRO-FM in 1978. In 1990, the WHRO-FM callsign was moved to 90.3 FM with a new classical music format. NPR news, jazz and alternative music stayed on 89.5 FM under the newly created WHRV callsign. Starting in 2009, multiple new full-power FM affiliate stations were signed-on to form a network of NPR affiliates serving Eastern Virginia.
