History

WGNS was initially a popular music station, having served in this capacity until the early 1990s, when the station, like many former AM music outlets, switched to a talk radio format. It is currently an ABC radio affiliate in addition to carrying various syndicated talk shows. The station has served as an Atlanta Braves baseball radio affiliate since 1981.[1]

WGNS broadcast its signal in C-QUAM AM stereo from the mid 1980s until it changed formats in the early 1990s.

The station's original self-supporting tower, which was 328 feet (100 m) tall and dated back to the World War II-era, was destroyed during a severe thunderstorm on April 15, 2001!

On March 1, 2007, WGNS began simulcasting its signal over two FM translators, at 101.9 MHz (call sign, W270AF) and 100.5 MHz (call sign, W263AI). WGNS was the first AM radio station in the United States to broadcast with this new type of FM translator. WRHI in Rock Hill, SC became the second AM broadcaster in the nation to begin this service. Their first broadcast was on the next day (March 2, 2007). Station owner Bart Walker had been working on getting regulations passed to allow this for almost a decade!
