W. John Walsh

William John Walsh is a religious studies scholar who specializes in Mormon Studies. He is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.[1]

Education

Walsh was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the Department of Religious Studies and Theology at The University of Wales, Lampeter in 2005. His dissertation was supervised by Dan Cohn-Sherbok. Walsh was awarded a Master of Science degree in Jewish Studies from the Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies under the supervision of Byron L. Sherwin in 2003. He has done post-doctrinal study at The University of Saint Thomas Graduate School of Theology at Saint Mary's Seminary in the areas of Christology, Church History, Doctrine of God, and Patristics (Patrology). Walsh graduated from the LDS Institute of Religion at Arizona State University and the Church Education System Seminary Teacher Training Program in 1993. Walsh also was awarded a Master of Business Administration degree from Brigam Young University in 1995 and a Bachelor of Science in Business degree from the University of the State of New York in 1989. Walsh is a present or past member of the Society of Biblical Literature, American Academy of Religion, Association for Jewish Studies, Mormon History Association, and Sunstone Education Foundation.

Expertise

Walsh has provided background information on Mormonism to a number of news organizations including CNN, NBC News, the Associated Press, Reuters News Service, The Deseret News, The Salt Lake Tribune, The Austin American-Statesman, The Houston Chronicle, the Today Show, and The Dr. Phil Show. He has also testified as an expert witness on Mormonism in various court proceedings in the United States and Canada.

Publications

In 2011, Walsh published a book entitled "Mormon Mysticism, Mythology, and Magic: Joseph Smith versus the Metaphysics of Nicene Christianity." In 2010, he published a journal article in the International Journal of Mormon Studies entitled "Are Jesus and Satan Brothers? A Short Exploration in Mormon Christology." In 2003, Walsh published two book reviews in the areas of Ancient Egypt and Christianity for the Review of Biblical Literature. In 1994, he published a compilation entitled "Latter-day Prophets Speak About Birth Control" which can be found in the Special Collections department at Brigham Young University. In the 1990's, Walsh gained prominence as the editor of All About Mormons, a web site devoted to Mormonism.
