Vol 1: The Aural Underground is the first album by Mammal, which was unconventionally recorded at a live show in contrast to a studio environment. Mammal, known very well for their intense and impressionable live shows, recorded the album live in one take, from start to finish at a sold out gig at The Evelyn Hotel[2] in their home town of Melbourne, Australia on 2 February 2007. Released and sold on their album launch tour, the album was then released in stores six days later.
The album featured what was a typical Mammal setlist at the time, composed of songs of the Mammal EP (New Breed Judas, Think, Hell Yeah, Inciting) and old live favourites (Groove Junkie, Push & Shove, Two Soles). Also featured were some very new songs; Dionysian, Maker & Believe, which only exist in this live form. Shortly after release a double A-side single, "Slaves/Nagasaki in Flames" was released as the first Mammal single to radio and almost a year to the day Mammal released their second album The Majority.
