Virginia Senate, District 3

District 3 of the Virginia Senate is a senatorial district located mostly on the Virginia Peninsula that encompasses all of the city of Poquoson, parts of the cities of Hampton and Suffolk, all of the counties of Gloucester, King and Queen, King William and New Kent and parts of the counties of Isle of Wight, James City, Surry and York. The current Senator from District 3 is Tommy Norment.

Historical boundaries

From 1940 - 1956, the 3rd District was located in South Hampton Roads and included all of the former Norfolk County, Virginia and the cities of Portsmouth and South Norfolk (today, the City of Chesapeake, Virginia incorporates much of Norfolk County and the City of South Norfolk.

In 1955, the district was redrawn and the City of Portsmouth was removed, so from 1956 - 1966, the district included Norfolk County and the City of South Suffolk which became the City of Chesapeake in 1963. From 1966 - 1972, the 3rd District included all of the cities of Chesapeake, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach.

After the 1971 redistricting, the 3rd district included all of the Eastern Shore counties of Northampton and Accomac from 1972 - 1991. From 1991 - 2001, the district included the Eastern Shore and territory from the Virginia Peninsula.

From 2001 - 2011, Senate District 3 included Gloucester County, James City County, New Kent County, City of Newport News (part), City of Williamsburg and York County (part).

Current boundaries

All Virginia Senate districts were redrawn in 2011 and the 2011 elections were contested in the these districts. The 3rd District includes all of the City of Poquoson, parts of the cities of Hampton, and Suffolk, all of the counties of Gloucester, King and Queen, King William, and New Kent and parts of Isle of Wight, James City County, Surry and York.[1] Fully 25% of the district's population is located in James City County.
