Vernek is a setttlement on the left bank of the river Sava in the Litija municipality in central Slovenia. Traditionally the area was part of Lower Styria and is now included with the rest of the municipality into the Central Slovenia statistical region.[2]

Archaeological evidence shows that the area was settled in the Roman period, most likely as a river port connected to trade up and down the river Sava.[3] The local church is dedicated to John the Baptist and belongs to the Hotič parish. It is first mentioned in written doucments dating to 1250, but the current building dates to the mid 18th century.[4]
