Valand

The Valand are Hindu caste found in the state of Gujarat in India.[1]

History and origin

The word valand in the Gujarati language means a barber. They are the traditional barbers of the Gujarat region. They claim to have been Brahmins, who due to some misfortune of history took up the occupation of barbering. The Valand deny any connection with the Nai caste of North India, who are also associated with barbering.[2] In this world 4 types of brahmin.valand is 1st type brahmin ,who gave vedsanskar 2year to 8 year child and then the child go to rishiasharam .The all valand is call nai brahmin.

Royal Family

The misfortune lead some Royal Family took up the barbering jobs.These royal family later collectively known as Valand.

Present circumstances

The Valand have several territorial divisions, such as the Soratia, Halai, Gohil, and Jalawadi. They are further divided into clans, called ataks, the main ones being the Solanki, Rathore, Vaghela, Parmar and Hanani. The Valand are endogamous and practice clan exogamy. They speak Gujarati and concentrated in the urban areas. The community are still essentially involved in the barbering trade, with a few rural Valand have taken up agriculture. A few were practitioners of Ayurvedic medicine.[3]
