Vadalur (Tamil: வடலூர்) is a panchayat town in Cuddalore district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

About the Town Ramalinga Swamigal popularly called 'Vallalar' had established the Sathyagnana Sabhai. The "Thai Poosam" function in January is a festival of this place. The Swamigal sang thousands of songs called "Thiru Arutppa". This district was named after him for a while.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[1] Vadalur had a population of 25,902. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Vadalur has an average literacy rate of 70%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 78%, and female literacy is 61%. In Vadalur, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age . Today, vadalur has grown to become one of the notable towns in South Arcot District. It is the major POC connecting the national highways between Chennai-Kumbakonam-Thanjavur and Cuddalore-Salem-Bangalore.

Vadalur has had its impact of the Lignite Mines effects of its adjacent city, Neyveli. Huge carbon deposits and powerful blasts for lignite mining operations (by the nearby Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC)), is the only polluting factor of Vadalur, an otherwise peaceful town.

Tourism

Vadalur attracts lot of tourists from all over the world because of the famous temple "Sathaya Gnana Sabha", established by the famous saint "VALLALAR" before 150 years. Every year the auspicious day "THAIPOOSAM" is celebrated as a grand occasion which attracts lot of pupil from all over the world.

Specialities

There exists a "JOTHI" or "Sacred Light" which was lighted by Vallalar himself in the temple,is kept lighted till now over 150 years. This "JOTHI" describes GOD IS LIGHT. He has no forms. We cannot see the "JOTHI" on normal days. There are 7 sacred screens which hide "JOTHI". The full "JOTHI" will be revealed on "THAIPOOSAM".

Those seven screens explain us many things. To see GOD(LIGHT) seven things has to be followed. Removing Jealous,Lies,Angriness,Desires from our heart, showing love to all living things, submitting ourself to god.Then we can reach GOD.

Then there is also a place called "SANMARKA SANGAM" which treats all the persons equal. No living things is said to be higher. Here every day they offer the food for the needy since 150 years. The place where they cook was started by VALLALAR and it was never stopped cooking. It is called "ANAYA ADUPPU".

Other Specialities

Vadalur is the native town of Mr.Omandhurar. He was the chief minister of Tamil Nadu once.

He started a school and it is still running in the name of VALLALAR GURUKUL. There were many trust which served the needy, orphans many years ago.

The notable one was "THIRUVARUTPA PARAYANA NILAYAM" which was started by GURU SWAMIGAL, later it was maintained by JANAKI AMMAIYAR. The trust existed from 1974 till 1995 which served the pupil and children food and shelter like a home.

There are few more trusts which serves pupil till now. ANNADHANAM(SERVING FOOD) is famous here.

Kanchi Ekambara Swamigal is running a charitable organisation at Vadalur. To the hungry and needy people, food is served daily since its opening.
