VROC

Virtual Researcher on Call (VROC) is a Canadian educational program administered by Partners in Research. The program connects students with researchers, scientists, and experts in the health and natural sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields through mentoring and video conferencing. In August 2010 additional subjects such as history and music were added to its core subject matter.

Contents

Video conferencing

"Reaching Every Student" uses video conferencing technology to allow scientists to give presentations to students in the classroom. The presentations are followed by a discussion.

Video conferences have taken place in Québec, Ontario, and Alberta, with access in other provinces planned for 2010.

Mentoring

"Mentor Me" allows teachers and students access to researchers and scientists via a multi-media network for the most up-to-date scientific information.

Partners

VROC is partnered with over 20 institutions including University of Toronto, University of Calgary, Biosphere (Environment Canada), and TRIUMF nuclear physics laboratory, as well as school boards across the country.[1][2]

Funding

VROC began with a "Reaching Higher" grant from the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities in 2006 under the Dalton McGuinty government.[3]

Each year Partners in Research hosts fund-raising "Evenings" in Ottawa, Toronto, and London, Ontario, with a reception, silent auction, and awards presentation. Guest speakers at past events have included astronaut Steven MacLean, science journalist Bob McDonald, and Lt. Gen. Hon. Roméo Dallaire.

Recognition

In 2006 VROC was named a "New and Noteworthy Initiative" by the Canadian Education Association.[4]

VROC was awarded the ORION Discovery Award of Merit in 2008.[5]
