Utraula is a city and a municipal board in Balrampur district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is approximately 45 kilometres from the border with Nepal and is 175 km in south east of capital city Lucknow. The nearest railway station is Balrampur (Lopline Gonda to Gorakpur) 28 km and For major trains Gonda 50 km apart.The city is very close (72 km) to the city of Ayodhya. The main occupation of Utraula residents is farming. Agricultural production includes wheat, paddy, different pulses, oilseeds and sugarcane. Mango and Guava orchards can also be found in abundance. However the population density is high and the productivity of land is not much high due to lack of technical agriculture. So a major working population is migrated towards big cities of India mostly to Mumbai. A significant proportion of the working population is also resides in gulf nation.

Utraula is situated beside Rapti river which is approximately 4 km. from Utraula's main market.

Demographics

As of the 2001 India census,[1] Utraula had a population of 27,491. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Utraula has an average literacy rate of 54%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 61%, and female literacy is 46%. In Utraula, 17% of the population is under 6 years of age. The Muslim Khanzada form a large part of rural population. The literacy rate seems to be O K, but the quality of education is very very low, and due to these regions the skilled people like Doctors or Engineers are very less. The quality of education also gets hampered because people get easy money in gulf or doing business in big Indian cities. Here corruption is very rampant because people are not literate, they get easy money from their sons abroad.

Schools and colleges

Although it's a small city with twenty seven thousand inhabitants it has several schools/colleges. It attracts students residing near the town or villages of Utraula town as well as from neighbouring towns. It has a degree college named Pragdevi Ramphal Mahavidyalaya, which is affiliated with Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia University Faizabad. Emmanuel Church school is one of the best schools of Utraula. it was founded by Dr. Mrs. Stefan Winkler of Germany in 1986 for the christians of the missionary hospital, Prem Seva Hospital. Now this building has grown up into a good schooling centre. nevertheless it is not being provided with affiliation for 9th and higher classes. its current principal is Mr. Victor Joshua. The main school situated in the hearth of city is Mohammed Yusuf Usmani Intercollege (earlier was known as King Gorge Inter College) which was established in 1927, up to 12th standard both arts and science education is given here. The other important is Bhartiya Vidalaya Inter College Besides this there is a Govt Girls Inter College situated here. The main CBSE School is M J ACTIVITY SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL and SCHOLAR'S ACADEMY.

Hospitals

There is one missionary hospital called Prem Seva Hospital, that is a Scottish hospital is more than 100 years old. Besides this there is a Govt hospital in Utraula. However the major healthcare system is run by private doctors which are mainly Unani Degree holders.

History: Before and during British Raj it was ruled by Nawab, the last Nawab was very generous towards his people. Even today people praise his intelligence and generosity. His buildings are still there although in dilapidated condition.
