Urapakkam is located near the capital city of Chennai in the state of Tamilnadu. It belongs to the Kanchipuram District. It is located between Vandalur and Guduvancheri. The railway line that runs through it separates the place into Urapakkam east and Urapakkam west. Urapakkam is bound on the western side by the Madambakkam & Adhanur villages, the eastern side by Karanai-Puducheri & Iyenchery villages, the northern side by Vandalur and the southern side by Guduvancheri. Also, it is very close to the fast-developing corridors like Vandalur-Kelambakkam Road & Oragadam-Sriperumbudur Road and the proposed Outer Ring Road (Vandalur to Minjur)
The Urapakkam Panchayat belongs to the Kattankulathur Panchayat Union. The village that buffers Urapakkam with Guduvancheri is Nandivaram and the village that buffers Urapakkam with Vandalur is Otteri.
Some of the prominent areas in Urapakkam include Arul nagar & M.G.Nagar in Urapakkam west and Kubera Nagar, Priya Nagar, Yamunai Nagar, Revathipuram & Sri Sathya Sai Nagar in Urapakkam east.
Urapakkam is supported by a fully functional electricity board and a village panchayat office. It has two sub post offices - one in east while the other is in west. Urapakkam does have two general hospitals of its own and shares them with Guduvancheri. Despite significant growth, Urapakkam lacks basic civic amenities such as water and good roads. Power cut is a common issue here. Sometimes it might extend up to 5 hours a day since Urapakkam falls just outside the CMA limit which ends at Vandalur. In many multistoreyed apartments at this locality, residents are forced to use staircases (instead of lift) often due to power problem.
Urapakkam is the fastest developing suburb on GST Road and currently has several housing projects under construction. Some of the prominent ones are those by Akshaya Homes (Belvedere), FeatherLite (Vaikuntham), S.I.S (Safaa & Marakesh), GRA International (Vandalur Park), Indus (Habiterra), Dakshin (GST on GST, Sidharth), Natwest (Aura), Arun Excello (Desh), P dot G (Panchavarna), Kesariya Developers (Highlands) and Marutham (Paradise, Spring, Classic).
The Railway Over Bridge project was started around July 2010 has been progressing well. It is expected to be complete by January 2012. It has contributed significantly to the rise in the real estate prices.
The railway lines that run from Tambaram to Chengalpattu are also undergoing some change. One of the metre gauge tracks is to be upgraded to broad gauge. The project has just started and is expected to go on for 3 more years. Another update on the transportation front is the extension of all trains that start from Chennai Beach to Chengalpattu. Currently most of the trains stop at Tambaram and only a few are extended to Chengalpattu.
The Govt. has directed the CMDA to prepare a plan for the area south of the CMA comprising Maraimalai Nagar Municipality, Guduvanchery – Nandivaram Town Panchayat, Thiruporur Town Panchayat and parts of Kattankulathur and Thiruporur Panchayat Unions. [23]
Proposed Monorail Corridor: Recently, the Govt. has announced the following routes as part of Phase 1 of the Chennai Monorail network. As Urapakkam is located next to Vandalur, this announcement is rather significant for Urapakkam residents.

Passport Seva Kendra is coming up at Tambaram to address the growing list of passport applicants. Urapakkam residents will be benefited due to its close proximity to Tambaram [24].
Rajini's Hospital at Vandalur (Proposed): Actor Rajinikanth is planning to construct a hospital for which land has been acquired near Vandalur. [25]
New Guideline values for Urapakkam: The guideline values of areas have been revised throughout the state and the new guideline value of GST Road, Urapakkam is Rs.3000 per sq.ft.
