The University of the Philippines Visayas Tacloban College (UPVTC) is a university in the Philippines.

A satellite college of the University of the Philippines, it was established on May 23, 1973 as part of the University of the Philippines Visayas and is considered as one of the leading universities in Region VIII.

Contents

History

In its 823rd meeting, the University of the Philippines (UP) Board of Regents established the UP College Tacloban as an answer to the urgent need for quality education in Region VIII. It was recognized as a regional unit of the System on May 23, 1973 and inaugurated on July 2, 1973.

Ten years later, Executive Order No. 4 placed UP College Tacloban under the administrative supervision of University of the Philippines Visayas.

Mission

The mission of the College is to develop humanist-oriented professionals and leaders by providing opportunities for a UP education to qualified secondary and tertiary education graduates. The College is likewise mandated to act as a catalyst of change through research and extension services that are geared towards improving the quality of life in Eastern Visayas.

The UPV Tacloban College (UPVTC) is divided into four divisions:

Academic programs

The college's BS Accountancy, BS Management, BS Biology, and BS Computer Science programs are currently the best in Region 8. The college's BA Communication Arts program is the finest in the Visayan archipelago in terms of Speech, Literature and Theater Arts.

Student organizations

UPV Tacloban College has more than 35 campus-based organizations and fraternities. Among these fraternities are the Alpha Phi Omega (APO), Tau Omega Mu (TOM), Tau Gamma Phi/Sigma (Triskelion), and Alpha Mu Omega (AMU). Runggiyan, UP Halcyon, UP An Leytean, Biological Society (UPVTC BioSoc), Brotherhood of Destiny (BROOD), Youth AIDS Filipinas Alliance, Inc. (YAFA), Animal Concerns and Awareness Club (AC2), Economics Society (EcoSoc), Ideopraxist, JPMAP, JPIA, Psych Circle, Interactive Society (InterSoc), Politikons, Pulso Han Mag-Aaram Party-Alliance, and UP Tacloban Debate Society are among the most prominent organizations. UPVTC DebSoc is the most successful debating organization in Eastern Visayas, and the best in the Visayas. BROOD UPV Tacloban and AC2 are the only organizations in the college that were recognized by the National Youth Commission as a Youth-Lead Organization,

UPVTC BioSoc hosts the most attended UPV Tacloban inter-high school quiz show annually — BiOlympiad, which attracts more than 10 public and private schools in Leyte and Samar.

The APO Oblation Run, spearheaded by the Alpha Phi Omega International Service Fraternity and Sorority - Theta Zeta Chapter, attracts more or less 500 spectators from other schools every December 16, the founding date of Alpha Phi Omega.The said event is simultaneously done by APO chapters of different UP campuses.

UP Runggiyan is the first student organization in UP Tacloban which was established right after the ban on student organization was lifted. It is committed in its objective in helping the community through relevant outreach programs such as "HALAD". The organization also hosts the annual Freshies Frolic which is anticipated by the whole college. It is also the organizer of the most distinguished "DANCE WARS" which is already in its 6 years now.
