Universiti Brunei Darussalam was established in 1985, only a year after the country regained full independence, with an intake of 176 students. In 1988, the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education was merged into the university.
The original mission of Universiti Brunei Darussalam, as a small national university, was to develop human resources through excellence in teaching, research and services in areas of importance to Brunei Darussalam.
The GenNext programme, which started in 2009, aims to provide a new kind of degree which "will align the university with some of the best practices in the world".[3]
The full mission of the university is now stated as:
Our mission is to develop the individual and society as a whole, guided by our commitment to the nation that we love and by extension, the world that we cherish. We will achieve this by pushing back the frontiers of human knowledge through the cultivation and enrichment of the intellect, faith and culture which will in turn be accomplished through the creation of a conducive environment for achieving excellence in teaching, learning, research, scholarship, public service and professional practices. In pursuing our mission, we shall be guided by the underlying values of our national philosophy.[4]
Construction on the university's Mosque began in 1992 on a site of 2032 hectares of land, and was completed in 1994, with a total cost of $7,600,000. The Mosque was officially opened in 1995 by Hassanal Bolkiah. It has a capacity of 1800.
