Gregorio Killi Camacho Sablan, the first delegate from the Northern Mariana Islands to the House of Representatives, is running for re-election.[1] Sablan is being challenged by Covenant Party candidate Joseph James N. Camacho, an attorney and former Floor Leader in the Northern Mariana Islands House of Representatives.[2][3] The local Republican Party candidate is Juan N. Babauta, the former Governor of the Northern Mariana Islands.[4] There is also one Democratic (CNMI) challenger, Jesus Borja, a former lieutenant governor.[5]
The race is likely to be highly competitive given Sablan's vulnerablity, having been elected by less than a quarter of the vote in 2008, the strong Republican political environment, and strong challengers.
This election, unlike the 2008 contest, will go to a runoff if no candidate succeeds in achieveing a simple majority in the initial election.
