Wegner trained and learned to box in the former GDR. Between 1961 and 1971 he boxed for different associations and fought 176 amateur fights. [1]
During his active years Wegner become won district masters several times and celebrated his largest success in 1970, when he became GDR master with his new association BSG bismuth Gera.
