Uebeschi is a municipality in the administrative district of Thun in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

Geography

Uebeschi has an area of 4.4 km2 (1.7 sq mi). Of this area, 91.6% is used for agricultural purposes, while 2.3% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 5.5% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (0.7%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains).[3]

It lies some 6 km (3.7 mi) to the southwest of the district capital Thun.

Lake Uebeschi after which the village is named lies several hundred metres to the south, however a greater part of it belongs to the neighbouring municipalities of Amsoldingen and Höfen.

Demographics

Uebeschi has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 695.[1] As of 2007, 1.0% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 2.8%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (97.3%), with French being second most common ( 1.2%) and Albanian being third ( 0.9%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 46% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the local small left-wing parties (17.9%), the SPS (11.9%) and the Green Party (8.4%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 30.2% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 58.8% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 10.9%. In Uebeschi about 72.5% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).

Uebeschi has an unemployment rate of 1.42%. As of 2005, there were 108 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 39 businesses involved in this sector. 19 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 9 businesses in this sector. 38 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 7 businesses in this sector.[3]
