The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is one of the four major UN office sites where several different UN agencies have a joint presence. The office complex is located in Nairobi, Kenya. It serves as the headquarters of the United Nations Environment Programme, and UN-HABITAT.
The complex of buildings is located next to the Karura Forest and across the street (United Nations Avenue) from the US Embassy in Nairobi.
In November 2004, the United Nations Security Council held a rare session at Nairobi to discuss the situations in southern and western Sudan.[1] The meeting was convened at the urging of then-Ambassador John Danforth of the United States.[2]
The UN Complex at Gigiri contains a 'green' building, a completely energy and carbon-neutral building, housing several UNEP offices. [3] [4] The building is the first of its kind in Africa, recycling water and using natural light to reduce reliance on artificial lighting. In addition, the building is designed to use natural flow of air as a substitute to air conditioning, and it contains solar panels to generate all the energy that the building would consume. [5] It was opened on 31st March 2011 by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon and Kenyan president Mwai Kibaki.
UNON also hosts the annual *East Africa Model United Nations Conference for secondary school and University students from East Africa.
