Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), Mumbai, is India's premier chemical engineering and technology research institute. It is an institute dedicated to training and research in various branches of Chemical Engineering, Chemical Technology, and Pharmacy. Over the last 76 years it has acquired the status of being a premier and renowned institute of Chemical Technology in the country.
The ICT was founded in 1933 as a Bombay University Department of Chemical Technology (known worldwide as UDCT) by the explicit desire and money of industrialists and philanthropists, to cater to the requirements of the chemical industry. Thus, since its very inception, it has maintained strong links with the chemical industry. The ICT has maintained its academic excellence over the past 75 years and is ranked amongst the best colleges in India.
The University of Mumbai conferred the autonomous status on the UDCT in 1994, with concurrence from the Maharashtra State Government and the UGC. Further the ‘UDCT’ was renamed as the Mumbai University Institute of Chemical Technology (Autonomous) (MUICT) on 26 January 2002.
The ICT was selected as a Lead Institution under the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) of the Govt. of India. For effective implementation of this programme, the Govt. of Maharashtra granted complete Autonomy to ICT since June 2004. On 12 September 2008, the ICT was granted the Deemed-to-be University status under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956. Now it is renamed as the Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) [Deemed University], and is functioning as per the Statutes, Ordinances, Regulations and Rules of its own.

The number of research articles published per faculty member of ICT is greater than any other research institute in the world. In 2003, ICT was awarded the Indian Mercantile Chamber (IMC) Bajaj Quality Award. Till recently headed by the renowned engineer Prof. J. B. Joshi, ICT has produced many notable alumni including Padmavibhushan Prof. M. M. Sharma; Dr. R. A. Mashelkar, past Director General, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (India); Mr. Mukesh Ambani, CMD, Reliance Industries Limited; Dr. Anji Reddy, Founder of Dr. Reddy's labs, Padmashree and Businessman of the Year 2001 by Business India amongst several others. Several awards and honors have been bestowed on the faculty, alumni and the students of ICT. These include Fellows of the Royal Society (2), Bhatnagar awardees (3), Fellows of the Indian National Science Academy (11), Fellows of Indian Academy of Sciences (13), Young Scientists Medal of INSA (3). Highly coveted Civil Honors such as Padmavibhushan (2), Padmabhushan (5) and Padmashree (8) have been bestowed on ICT faculty and alumni. Prof. M.M.Sharma former Director of ICT has also received the Life Time Achievement award by the Indian National Academy of Engineering.
The ICT has brought kudos to the state of Maharashtra, despite being at a disadvantaged position with reference to other technological institutes of national importance, particularly the IITS, IISc, ISERS, NISERs and Central Universities. Its stellar performance is reflected in the following:
1. The MHRD had evaluated all deemed universities in the country in 2009 and granted “A” grade to 38 universities among 135 deemed universities. The ICT is rated as Number One Deemed University with “A” grade. It is the only one among 4 in Maharashtra State, the other 3 being centrally funded TIFR, TISS and CIFE.
2. The ICT has also been rated as Number One Institute by NPIU among 127 TEQIP funded Institutes, all over India, in October, 2010.
3. Biospectrum magazine in August 2010 has also rated ICT’s programme as Number One among all biotechnology programmes in the country and the first prize was bestowed on 17 December at Bangalore.
4. A survey was published by Professor Jude Sommerfeld of Georgia Tech., USA showing that the ICT is Number One Institute in India far ahead of several others including IITs, and it is also in top 10 in the world in Chemical Engineering. This rank has been maintained since 1970s.
5. Very recently the UGC decided to recognize faculty who have supervised as single guides at least 15 Ph.Ds. The ICT has a record of 11 faculty who qualified for special grants. The Director (Vice Chancellor) Professor G. D. Yadav is the topmost among all academics with supervision of 61 Ph.Ds. and 58 masters degree holders. He is the only serving faculty in the State to be a Fellow of the TWAS- the Academy of the Developing World, Trieste, Italy, including Fellowship of INSA.
6. Institute of Chemical Technology has been ranked 18th best in the country, among public engineering colleges in a livemint survey in 2008 with only three NITs ahead of ICT.[1]
However, in a more recent Hindustan Times survey conducted in June 2009,[2] ICT has been ranked 11th in the country, ahead of all the NITs, and behind only the IITs, IT-BHU, COE-Guindy and Jadavpur University's Faculty of Engineering.
7. In a recent survey conducted by IIM, Bangalore on the relevance of academic research that has contributed to product or process improvements in the industry, MUICT appears in number one position for both chemical and pharmaceutical fields. Total 71 firms participating the survey, cited 106 academic researchers from 56 institutes. MUICT occupied the first position with 33% share in chemicals with IIT-B in the second place with only 8%.ref
ICT faculty members obtain several research grants through national institutions and international collaborative research programs. International collaborative programs are a common feature in ICT. Indo-US, Indo-French, Indo-EU, Indo-SA, Indo-Netherlands programs have been instrumental in producing several outstanding research contributions in both fundamental and applied science. Some of the important on-going international collaborations include Akzonoble, Ensic-Topulouse, Purdue University, University of Birmingham, Huntsman Polyurethanes. Some of the important collaborators of ICT include the Department of Atomic Energy, India; Dr. Homi Bhabha Research Centre (BARC), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), [Biorad] and Reliance Industries Limited. .
Industrial consultancy is another unique feature of ICT faculty members. The core goals are as follows: to realize and utilize the fruitful research at the implementation stage, to focus the research to the directly relevant areas with potential commercialization, solve specific technical problems faced by the industry, nurture industry-academics interactions and attract competent and highly qualified technocrats to occupy faculty positions at ICT. Interestingly, many faculty members pay out their salaries through the one-third share of the consultation fees to the University.
The ICT faculty and alumni have been associated with the central and state governments. ICT provided the first central minister Shri Manubhai Shah, Minister for Heavy Industries in the cabinet of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. The alumni participate in several Government committees like those of Department of Biotechnology, Department of Science and Technology, MHRD, AICTE, etc. The involvement of ICT in framing of National policies can be judged from the fact that alumni and faculty have been members of such bodies as the Planning Commission, Scientific Advisory Committee to the Prime Minister, to the Cabinet, to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and to the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers. Thus, the ICT enjoys a prominent position in Academic, Industrial and Government circles.
ICT is spread over 16 acres (65,000 m2). The main building faces Nathalal Parikh Marg and has a beautiful architecture with fine dressed stone. The lush green gardens of the ICT are a matter of pride especially to the ICT gardeners. ICT gardens have bagged several prizes at the City level. Other buildings, three boys hostels, two ladies hostels, faculty and staff apartments are located behind the main building. The rear boundary of the institute runs along Kidwai Road.
The ICT has a penchant for excellence and its grand portico, with its four magnificent pillars, symbolize to many the Portals of Excellence.
