UCDFC is the fencing club of University College Dublin. Founded in 1955[1] by Prof. Patrick Doherty and Rev. O'Doherty[2] it is one of the oldest clubs in the country and at a current membership of 157,[3] it is also the largest. Despite the former weakness of fencing in Ireland[4] the UCDFC has become a leading member of the Irish Fencing Federation, contributing significantly to the establishment of the sport in the country; where the current highest ranked male foilest in the country[5] is a former member, and the highest ranked sabreur is a former captain and an honourary life member. [6] The current highest ranked student male foilest and student male epeeist[7] are both current members. The club competes with distinction across the country and has achieved the Intervarsity Trophy a total of twenty times.[8]

In the academic year of 2010/2011, among other achievements, the club achieved medals in each discipline in which they competed in the West of Ireland Open Championship.[9] The club itself hosts a number of annual competitions, the most significant of which is the East of Ireland Open, which is the second largest international competition held in the country after the Irish Open.
