Etymology

The name is related to the Arabic verb (Arabic: طرق‎, ṭaraqa) meaning "Nocturnal visitor" or "Brightest Star." [1]

It means to knock or hammer; and thus the name has the meaning "the knocking one" or "the one who knocks" or "the one who uses a hammer." [2]

The second meaning is the meaning from the Qur'an, where ṭāriq is the name of the morning star, which is described as the shining star which leads the way: Nightcomer or Star of piercing brightness (At-Tariq, verse 3).

More recent discoveries about pulsar stars have prompted some scholars to associate those Neutronic stars with ṭāriq, where knocking equates pulsing

Named after Tariq ibn-Ziyad a military leader who conquered Spain for the Moors. [3]
