Turpan Prefecture (simplified Chinese: 吐鲁番地区; traditional Chinese: 吐魯番地區; pinyin: Tulufán Dìqū; Uyghur: تۇرپان ۋىلايىتى, ULY: Turpan Wilayiti, UPNY: Turpan Vilayiti?), also known as Turfan Prefecture or Tulufan Prefecture, is located in the east of Xinjiang, People's Republic of China. It has an area of 69,324 km² and a population of 570,000 (2003).

According to the 2000 Census, of its inhabitants, 70.01% are Uyghur, 23.3% are Han, 6.38% are Hui, with the remainder belonging to other ethnicities.
Turpan has a harsh, cold desert climate (Köppen BWk), with long and very hot summers, winters that are quite cold and moderately long, and brief spring and autumn in between. Annual precipitation is very low, amounting to only 15.7 millimetres (0.62 in). Monthly average temperatures range from −7.6 °C (18.3 °F) in January to 32.2 °C (90.0 °F) in July, and the annual mean is 14.4 °C (57.9 °F).
Extremes at Turpan City have ranged from −28.9 °C (−20 °F) to 48.1 °C (119 °F).[1]
