Turks in Bosnia and Herzegovina, also known as Bosnian Turks, are ethnic Turks who form an ethnic minority in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Due to the Ottoman colonisation process, a significant Turkish community emerged when the Ottoman Empire conquered Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1386; the community grew steadily throughout the following centuries. However, in the early 1900s, after the Ottomans were defeated in the Balkan Wars, the majority of Turks along with other Muslims living in the region left their homes and migrated to Turkey. According to the 1991 population census in Bosnia and Herzegovina there was 267 Turks living in the country;[2] however, current estimates suggest that the Turkish community actually numbers 50,000.[1][3]
