Turkish Cup
The Turkish Cup (Turkish: Türkiye Kupası) is a football cup competition in Turkish football, run by the Turkish Football Federation since 1962. During a brief sponsorship period with Fortis, its sponsored name was Fortis Türkiye Kupası. Now Ziraat Bankası is the sponsor and the sponsored name for the cup is Ziraat Türkiye Kupası. [1]
The cup was created in 1962 and has taken place every year since then. In 2009, the format was changed to increase the number of participating clubs from 54 to 72, allowing clubs in the TFF Third League to enter.[2] Due to match fixing allegations, Beşiktaş have returned the cup for 2011–12 season back to the Turkish Football Federation.[3] For the 2011–12 season, another format change has been made. 57 teams participate in a single-elimination tournament without any group stage.
Format
The current format of the Turkish Cup consists of 57 clubs from the top four leagues of the Turkish football league system. The first round consists of 22 clubs from the TFF Second League and TFF Third League grouped into different regions. The second round consists of winners from the first round alongside relegated clubs from the Süper Lig and the fifteen clubs who didn't gain promotion from the TFF First League. Teams playing in the Süper Lig enter at the third qualifying stage. After a fourth qualifying stage comes the final stage. Clubs play all final stage matches in neutral grounds.[2]
The final consists of a single match that takes place in a neutral setting. The winner of the cup earns a spot in the play-off round of the UEFA Europa League, and also plays in the Turkish Super Cup against the Süper Lig champions. If the winner of the cup has already secured a spot in an European competition because of their league finish, the runners-up are sent to compete.[2] Because of this, Kayseri Erciyesspor competed in the 2007–08 UEFA Cup despite being relegated to the TFF First League that season.
