Tsiurupynsk
Tsiurupynsk (Ukrainian: Цюрупинськ, Tsyurupynsk) is a city in Kherson Oblast (province) of Ukraine that until 1928 was called Oleshky. It is the oldest city of the oblast and one of the oldest in the southern Ukraine. Population of it is 30,123 (2001).
It was named after Alexander Tsiurupa, the former Soviet Trade Minister and the chief of Gosplan. Tsiurupa was born in the city which was renamed after he died in 1928.
History
- 1084 Oleshia, medieval port-city, destroyed by the Mongol-Tatars
- 1711-1728 Oleshky Host was located on territory of modern city
- 1784 the settlement of Oleshky was established that in 1790 became part of the Kinburn palanka of Black-sea Cossacks.
- 1802 the settlement obtained the city rights and became the center of the Dnipro uyezd (povit) of the Taurida Governrate.
- In 1925 town was renamed to Tsiurupynsk from Oleshky, its original name
- On November 21, 2007 the city council accepted the decision (#296) to rename the city back to Oleshky.[1] The deputies of the city and the distrct councils as well as the local cossacks wrote a letter to the President of Ukraine requesting for the decision to be carried out.
Geography
- River Konka goes through the town and falls in to Dnieper
- Tsiurupynsk is on the left bank of Dniper
- Oleshky Sands in a close proximity
